Every year, when winter slowly starts appearing in Austria, I’m reminded of one of my all-time favourite movies: The Sound of Music.
And what better city to visit if you love The Sound of Music than Salzburg.
Filmed mostly in Salzburg, the celebrated portrayal of the Family Von Trapp has given the city a boost in tourism and revenue since its release. People flock from all over the world to get a glimpse of the famous images from the film, to take countless pictures in Sound of Music poses, and undoubtedly most break into song while they do it.
For those of you who know The Sound of Music, the iconic gazebo where two tender love scenes take place has been fully restored and is on display for tourists to visit. Sadly, you can’t go inside and recreate Liesl and Friedrich’s “16 Going on 17? twirls or Maria and Captain Von Trapp’s first kiss, but you can stand outside, take pictures and know that this is where Liesl fell in love.
If it’s landscape and scenery you love, take a trip out to the hills, where the famous opening scene was filmed and Maria enchanted audiences with “The Hills are Alive”. If you’re looking for gorgeous greenery and stunning architecture, visit the Mirabell Gardens where Maria and the children gallivant in their play clothes made out of curtains (much to Captain Von Trapp’s chagrin) and learn their “Do Re Mi”s when they sing “Doe a Deer”.
If the romantic and glamorous wedding was your favourite scene, relive the memory at Wedding Church Mondsee where the film’s wedding took place. Or, visit the location of the real Maria and Captain Von Trapp’s wedding, at Nonnberg Abbey where they were married in 1927.
If you are not a Sound of Music fan, fear not, Salzburg will not disappoint.
The architecture is beautiful all over the city and the landscape is breath-taking.
